Book Review:
Unlike the plot, which sound VERY interesting, the book itself is not… It is an extremely slow story and you really have to be committed and in love with the book to enjoy it.

Let’s start with the plot. Other than being VERY slow, The whole reason behind the competition was very disappointing. It was only revealed in the last chapter and went by so quick that you couldn’t really feel the importance or the depth of it. which in that case makes you wonder why they kept on going for so many years…
Also there was a LOT of untold stories which you might not care about, but to me has a big role and is what makes the story interesting. If you’ve read this book and you want to know exactly what I’m talking about click on So why do the Murray twins age when everyone else don’t? Their hair and all that stuff was in Marco’s book too… What was the story behind the stuff Isobel had collected? What did she do that resulted in Heir Thiesson’s death? How did Heir Thiesson die? How is it that Alexander looks down on Hector for seeking eternal life when he himself is practically a living ghost? How is he even living in this world and being seen when he is a ghost? Do I really need to give more examples? for some examples.
I don’t know how many times I’ve said this already but I don’t like it when I have to do the job for the author. I hate guessing and imagining things that are not stated in the book. It’s not my story.

Moving on to characters. First of all, there are sooo many characters introduced to us from the start that you keep losing track. Not having much background information on them or their own voice makes it hard to remember who they are and what purpose they have in the story. Also the timeline changes in each chapter and jumps from character to character AND jumps from past to future and vise versa to the point you have no idea when the present time actually is. So… yeah… it’s a mess… Don’t even bother reading the dates because seriously, you won’t remember it…There are more than 600 pages in this book… (I have no idea why they advertised as 400 pages…)
Awful character development in my opinion. There is not enough of any character in this book.  You don’t get to understand their personalities and you don’t get close enough to them to be able to like them or look forward to what comes next. Sure there are bits and pieces here and there but to be honest…they don’t come off as anything interesting. They go from 0 to 100 REAL QUICK! for example (and this is not a spoiler because it already states in the summery that the rivals will fall in love) You’ve got Ceilia who’s going about her competition and doing the best magic she can without even knowing who her opponent is, and then you got Marco who knows his opponent but is only intimidated by her strength. But suddenly, out of nowhere, they fall in love VERY dramatically. And then Ceilia goes on saying how she always had feelings for her opponent even though she didn’t know who he was! (OVERACTING right there! Even Romeo and Juliet didn’t act like this…)
Anyways, I could go on about each character like that but I think you understand what I’m trying to say.

So, what did I like about this book that deserves a 1 star and not 0? To be honest I really did like the circus and the idea of having it black and white and so magical. The set was good and I have no complains about it. I loved the clock, I loved the fact that every performer had their own tents, I loved how they had their own treats with special names that you can only find in that circus and I really loved the fact that they set up over night and appeared out of nowhere. The problem with the book was the plot and the characters. (mostly the characters) but unfortunately that’s where most of the rating goes and I didn’t like them enough to raise it.

Overall, I liked the idea of the circus, the characters were unlikable and the plot was slow and boring. (sounds VERY interesting in the summery but the way it was told just bored me.)
I just had to finish it because of 3 reasons:
1. I started reading the book already.
2. I was hoping it would get better.
3. I need to know the whole story to give an accurate review.

Favourite Quote:
Didn’t really like any quotes in there, unfortunately. 🙁
